Allscripts Sunrise, TouchWorks and Paragon decommissioning

The short answer: Allscripts Sunrise decommissioning, like TouchWorks and Paragon retirement, means archiving the historical clinical, financial and HIM record so the legacy system can be switched off. BytePad from InterScripts keeps that history retrievable for chart recall, release of information, legal hold and audit, with AI Global Search across structured data and scanned documents.

Why do organizations archive and retire Allscripts?

Allscripts changed its corporate name to Veradigm Inc. on January 1, 2023. Earlier, in 2022, Allscripts sold its hospitals and large physician practices business, including Sunrise, Paragon and TouchWorks, to N. Harris Computer Corporation, part of Constellation Software, which operates it as Altera Digital Health. Organizations searching for Allscripts archiving are usually retiring one of these three products, so support, contracts and data-access requests for them now generally run through Altera rather than Veradigm.

Sunrise is an acute-care EHR used by hospitals and health systems, TouchWorks is an ambulatory EHR used by large physician groups, and Paragon is a hospital information system used by community hospitals. They are different products with different data models, and many organizations that are retiring one also run another, so the archive plan has to treat each as its own source.

What does a Allscripts archive need to preserve?

Scope the archive around the jobs it must do once Allscripts is gone: chart recall, release of information, audit and legal hold, receivables follow-up, and retention through disposition.

Clinical record

  • Sunrise inpatient and emergency documentation, orders, results and medication administration
  • TouchWorks ambulatory notes, problem lists, medications, allergies and immunizations
  • Paragon encounter history, results and nursing documentation
  • Laboratory and radiology results and reports
  • Referral, care coordination and patient communication history

Revenue cycle

  • Hospital and professional billing history, including charges, payments and adjustments
  • Claims and remittance history, including X12 837 and 835 where retained
  • Open receivables and denial history for workdown after cutover
  • Practice management and scheduling history needed for audits

HIM and release of information

  • Patient identity and merge history across products
  • Chart completion and coding history
  • Release-of-information requests and disclosure accounting
  • Access audit history

Images and documents

  • Scanned documents, outside records and faxed results attached to the chart
  • Transcribed and dictated reports
  • Signed consents and forms
  • Images and image references held outside PACS

What should you plan for when extracting Allscripts data?

  • Sunrise, TouchWorks and Paragon do not share a data model. A program retiring more than one should run separate inventories, mappings and reconciliations for each, then present them together in the archive under a single patient view.
  • Since the 2022 divestiture, confirm with Altera Digital Health what database-level access, reporting copies and export tools your license and hosting arrangement permit, and review data-return terms before the support contract end date is set.
  • Ambulatory groups on TouchWorks commonly hold large volumes of scanned documents, outside records and faxed results. Treat these as a separate workstream with its own indexing and OCR plan, because they are often what the release-of-information desk requests most.
  • Where Sunrise or Paragon fed downstream billing, data warehouse or registry systems, map those dependencies before any interface is turned off.

How long must Allscripts records be retained, and what about legal holds?

Hospital records from Sunrise and Paragon fall under the Medicare Conditions of Participation, which require retention for at least 5 years (42 CFR 482.24), plus state hospital rules that are often longer. Physician-group records from TouchWorks follow state rules for practitioner records, which vary by state and by patient age.

Because one organization may hold hospital and professional records with different retention periods, assign retention per record type and enforce litigation holds at the record level. Records covered by 42 CFR Part 2 need their consent and re-disclosure controls carried into the archive.

Retention periods vary by state, record type and patient age. See hospital record retention by state and defensible disposition, and confirm the schedule with your counsel and records management team.

How does BytePad archive and retire Allscripts?

BytePad ingests each Allscripts product as a separate source through its 100+ pre-built connectors and standards-based ingestion for HL7, FHIR, X12, DICOM and free text. Schema validation and record-count reconciliation confirm completeness, and chain-of-custody is preserved from extract to archive.

Document management with OCR turns TouchWorks and Sunrise scanned content into searchable records, AI Global Search lets HIM staff find a patient across products in one query, the ROI and disclosure module fulfills requests from the archive, and the AR Workdown module supports collections on legacy Allscripts receivables after go-live.

AI Global Search

What does a phased Allscripts decommissioning look like?

InterScripts runs Allscripts retirements through the four phases of the 12-step legacy EHR decommissioning playbook. A single system typically takes 9 to 18 months end to end.

  1. Phase 1 · Steps 1 to 4

    Discover and plan

Inventory, dependency mapping, retention-schedule mapping and a written disposition policy.

Inventory each Allscripts product in use, its modules, interfaces, document stores and downstream consumers. Confirm data-access and data-return terms with Altera Digital Health, then assign retention by record type.

  2. Phase 2 · Steps 5 to 7

Select the archive and move the data

Platform selection, full and incremental source extraction, then ingest with validation and reconciliation.

Extract each product in full, then incrementally until cutover. Reconcile record counts per product and record type, and have HIM, clinical and revenue cycle owners sign off on sample charts and accounts.

  3. Phase 3 · Steps 8 to 10

    Cut over and prove retrieval

Interface sunset, ROI and disclosure workflow validation, and a read-only sustainment window, typically 6 to 12 months.

Retire Allscripts interfaces after each downstream consumer has a replacement. Keep the products read-only for the sustainment window while ROI, chart recall and audit requests are served from BytePad.

  4. Phase 4 · Steps 11 and 12

    Sunset and hand off

License termination, infrastructure decommission under chain of custody, and operational handoff.

End Allscripts licenses and support, sanitize servers and storage under a documented chain of custody, and hand the archive to business-as-usual ownership.

What do teams ask about Allscripts archiving?

Can BytePad archive Allscripts Sunrise, TouchWorks and Paragon?

Yes. InterScripts has archived and decommissioned Allscripts Sunrise, TouchWorks and Paragon environments. Each product is treated as its own source, validated with schema validation and record-count reconciliation, and loaded into BytePad with chain-of-custody preserved.

Who supports Sunrise, TouchWorks and Paragon now?

In 2022 Allscripts sold its hospitals and large physician practices business, including Sunrise, Paragon and TouchWorks, to N. Harris Computer Corporation, which operates it as Altera Digital Health. Allscripts itself renamed to Veradigm in January 2023, so data-access conversations for these products usually involve Altera.

We run Sunrise for the hospital and TouchWorks for clinics. Can one archive hold both?

Yes. Each product is extracted and reconciled separately, then presented in BytePad under a single patient view, so HIM staff and clinicians can search acute and ambulatory history together with AI Global Search.

How long does an Allscripts Sunrise decommissioning take?

A single legacy system typically takes 9 to 18 months from inventory to final sunset, including a 6 to 12 month read-only sustainment window. Retiring several Allscripts products together usually becomes an enterprise program of 18 to 36 months.
