Healthcare Privacy Is At Risk

Everyone reading this will remember the year 2020 for the rest of their lives. For most of us in the business of stopping breaches and protecting enterprises from cyberattacks, it was also perhaps the most active year.

In the early days of the pandemic, objectives for targeted intrusion actors may have included acquiring information on infection rates or country-level responses, however, faced with daunting infection rates, COVID-19 vaccine research was a high priority for many state-sponsored intrusions.

Healthcare is one of the most highly targeted sectors by ransomware, with 20% of medical files open to every healthcare employee, and the average employee having access to 31,000 files on their first day of work, that is a huge amount of unsecured Protected Health Information (PHI).

Based on the healthcare breach data published on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, most of the healthcare information is leaked by hacking Network Servers Most of the reported breaches are accidents, for example when a misconfigured cloud server leaves millions of people’s health record online. (Report by ProPublica)

The protection of medical information is thus an important case study for us all, with a growing number of healthcare data security breaches. When not only critical data, but also lives are at stake, security could not be more important.
